Joël A. Prévost | Ceramic Artist and Sculptor in Nanaimo BC

Sculptor & Ceramic Artist |  Nanaimo, British Columbia

With more than 25 years of experience as a sculptor and art educator, Joël A. Prévost brings a remarkable breadth of creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic exploration to his work. Working primarily in clay and ceramics, his practice encompasses expressive figurative sculptures, whimsical animal forms, and decorative ceramic pieces. His work reflects a lifelong fascination with form, movement, and the expressive possibilities of three-dimensional art.

Born in the Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec in 1963, Prévost moved with his family to Nanaimo in 1977. His early interests in music and dance laid the foundation for a creative career that would span multiple artistic disciplines. After studying Community Development in Nova Scotia, he returned to Nanaimo, becoming actively involved in the local arts community as a cultural facilitator, event producer, and promoter of music and visual arts. He also founded and operated the World Beat Cafe in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter.

During these formative years, Prévost began developing his sculptural practice, cultivating a particular interest in the human figure. In 2006, he relocated to Montreal, where he established L’Atelier de Sculpture du Village. Over the following decade, he instructed students from diverse creative fields, including cinema, circus, animation, video game development, and the visual arts, with an emphasis on figurative sculpture and working from life models.

Returning to Vancouver Island in 2017, Prévost founded the Vancouver Island Sculpting Studio in Nanaimo, where he continues to create, teach, and mentor fellow artists.

Today, his artistic practice extends beyond traditional figurative sculpture, embracing whimsical sculptural subjects and decorative ceramic works. His diverse creations reflect both the technical expertise of a seasoned sculptor and the curiosity of an artist who continues to explore new forms of expression.
