Lucky Cat 1 - Original Painting by Kimberly Furnell

An original mixed-media painting by local Nanaimo-based artist Kimberly Furnell.  Lucky Cat 1 is the first in a series featuring the iconic "Chinese Lucky Cat"; which is actually a Japanese figurine known as the Maneki-neko (literally "beckoning cat"). The cat's raised paw (with palm facing down) is a traditional Japanese gesture to call people or customers over. It is very popular figurine in Chinese businesses and homes, which causes many people to mistake it for a Chinese invention.
