Canadian Sculptor Robyn Foster with Ceramic Octopus Sculpture

Based in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, Foster hand-builds each sculpture individually, allowing the clay to evolve organically as flowing forms, twisting tentacles, and richly layered glazes emerge. Every sculpture is entirely unique.

Rather than simply recreating anatomy, she captures personality, gesture, and presence—creating works that feel simultaneously powerful, inquisitive, graceful, and alive.

Inspired by the Pacific coastline surrounding her home, Foster explores themes of movement, transformation, resilience, and our enduring connection to the natural world. Her luminous glazes evoke shifting ocean depths, while sweeping tentacles and tactile surfaces create sculptures that invite viewing from every angle. Whether resting quietly or appearing poised for motion, each octopus possesses an unmistakable sense of life and individuality.

Foster received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours with Distinction) from the University of Victoria before earning a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Western Ontario. In recognition of her exceptional sculptural practice, she was awarded the prestigious Helen Pitt Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sculpture. Her work has been exhibited nationally throughout Canada, including large-scale installation projects, and is held in private collections. 

Alongside her studio practice, Foster founded Creative Escape Art Programs in Nanaimo, where she has inspired creativity within her community for more than a decade. Today, her artistic focus continues to evolve through contemporary ceramic sculpture, pushing the expressive possibilities of clay while honouring the elegance and complexity of the marine world. 

As one of Canada’s emerging contemporary marine sculptors, Robyn Foster is creating a distinctive body of work that resonates with collectors drawn to exceptional craftsmanship, coastal living, and museum-quality ceramic sculpture. Her octopuses are not merely representations of sea life—they are sculptural portraits that celebrate the intelligence, mystery, and quiet poetry of the ocean itself.
